Joomlatools Blog: DOCman 1.5 Internal Beta released

  • Tramber91 · 2 months ago
    Hi,
Congratulation, we all waiting for !!
at the same moment we have the launch of JoomDoc presented as DocMan 2 by Artio.
No relationship between these 2 products ?

    take care
  • Johan Janssens · 2 months ago
Thank you for your comment. There is no relationship between both products.

Artio's version is a copy of DOCman 1.4. They have removed our copyrights from the source code which is a clear violation of the GPL license. It's a bit the same like stealing code.

There have been other similar incidents in the Joomla community latetly, for example : http://brian.teeman.net/mister-men/inspired-cop...
  • Brian Teeman · 2 months ago
Such a shame that people do not understand what the GPL licence means. You have the freedom to modify code of course but you do NOT have the freedom to remove the copyright or to change the licence to the code that you recieved. Something sadly Artio do not understand

I just want to make sure that migrating to the new version will not blow away any DOCman modules and links that are currently active on our sites (it happened once). Once you are completed with 1.5 we would really appreciate a clear HOWTO on upgrading the component/modules safely. Thanks!
  • Johan Janssens · 2 months ago
Thanks for the tip. We will make sure to provide proper instructions. On small tip : always backup installation before performing an upgrade. Save you in case something goes wrong.

Awesome! Long awaited. Thanks for all the hard work!

I just happened to email Johan about this the other day and was happy to hear the news :-).

On the staff website I'm working on I went ahead and created the category structure for the current year which went something like this:
    Committees
    College Council
    Subcommittees
    Budget and Fiscal Planning
    2009-10
    Agendas
    Minutes

Plus a whole lot of other subcommittees. But the reason I bring it up is because the current category creation workflow is a bit slow and for example it's going to take quite a bit of time to add the 2010-11 Agendas/Minutes folders for all of the committees when the time comes (or even, to add in the folders for the copious amount of previous year Agendas/Minutes). Plus those ordering arrows act a little bonkers.

If, as a feature enhancement you find it in your small amount of free time (what with all of the Nooku goodness going around :-) you have some inspiration as to make creating categories simpler (some type of bulk copy/entry mode) it would probably assist a whole lot of users like myself :-).

Thank you for all you guys do regardless,

    Hi,
thanks for your great work. We are using DocMan to manage over 500 documents at ur B2B-Portal. It works great and we hope we can turn off the legacy mode with DocMan 1.5.

    Bye
    Steven

I am very glad to see this is coming! -- soon (I hope!). In my humble opinion DocMan is the best front end file manager for Joomla. I tried to subscribe to your email newsletter but got an error. Any way to be on a list to find out when the public release of native 1.5 is out?

    Thanks!
  • Johan Janssens · 2 months ago
Thanks for letting us know about the email newsletter problem. We will have a look into this asap.

I know Docman for a long time, never used until now, but for what I've read, you are quite amazing!!! 2 projects well built in 1 year and avoiding problems... you are something else! Keep up with your good work and nothing more but to congratulate you all. Saludos desde México.

cant wait. Just thought of switching as Docman could be dead...

    Now no more switching...

    Thanks,
  • Johan Janssens · 2 months ago
DOCman is very much alive ! We are planning to give it the bright future it deserves.

I read this when I was testing several DMS i.e. Remository, JDownloads, Phoca Download. All of these have pros and cons. But none is better than my old Docman 1.4.
So I had to load and test JoomDoc also...
Was surprised that Artio only made a native version.
No THX to the developer of Docman, no equivalent copyright notice.
OK - uninstalled - decided not to use this product :-(

The community also takes care :-)

I have been tasked to set up and test a document managemnet website for the school I work at in Sweden, I have "given up" on drupal and came accross Joomla and "DocMan" - would it be possible that I could try out your beta version as I need to get something up and running this week ! - drupal doesn't seem to want to play and failing that I will have to revert to MS Sharepoint :( - I would be more than happy to test out our beta product and give you feedback etc.. - I am completly new to Joomla but think it would be better than Sharepoint, but am running out of time to "come up with the goods" if you get my drift.. - MANY THANKS, Dave.
  • Johan Janssens · 1 month ago
Hi Dave, thanks for offering to help us with testing. I have send you a personal mail.
  • malubame · 1 month ago
Same to me ... but w/o Sharepoint. Had testet Jdownloads, Remository, Phocadownload and would like to get a downmload link to the BETA 1.5
Is there a way to take over all the entries from version 1.4? Let's test ist.

    THX in advance
  • Johan Janssens · 1 month ago
A download for the 1.5 beta is not available yet. The beta is currently tested internaly by a group of experienced users.

The release will be fully compatible with 1.4 and be a simple upgrade.

Are there any timescales to DocMan 1.5? Currently developing our company Intranet. Unfortunately, i have a 2 month deadline so would love to troubleshoot and return feedback to speed up development.
  • Thuf · 1 month ago
just noticed that the date on the article is " by Mathias Verraes Published on 9/30/2009 ", perhaps just a little bug.

I have a huge client that needs to get out of legacy mode to install a workflow extension.. is there anyway that I can get a hold of the beta to download for them? Thanks -Jess
